I have fond memories of drawing cars and planes on the underside of my mums favorite coffee table. As a child i had an obsession with understanding how things worked, this involved breaking objects examining their parts and trying to put them back together, i would often try to add my own modifications trying to better the original object.
Art was my favorite subject throughout high school, i feel that it really garnered my expressive qualities. I also discovered Andy Warhol’s philosophy during my hsc study, after further reading of his autobiography ‘a to b and back again’ i became fond of his work ethic, his obsession towards the creative process and his philosophy toward mass communication through his commercial illustrations and his “business art”. During the hsc i came to the realisation that fine art is not the most effective media for mass communication.
I viewed product design as the most effective from of mass communication, the most direct means to respond to individuals en masse. I am thrilled to have chosen a career with such diverse and varied applications, which requires a thirst for knowledge and an acute set of skills. The whole process of product design really excites me, a product designer has an extremely intimate relationship with his/her design from its initial conception towards creating appearance models, then towards specifying manufacturing techniques. I enjoy the passion product designers have for their careers, there is a real romance between a designer and his/her ideas, one lives and breathes design, it is the way they live and react to their environments. I hope to have a career in such an immersing field.
Ideally i see myself as a freelance product designer who has worked in a great number of industries, however i have great interest in the mundane, the everyday, i feel that this area has the most significant impact. I would have great pleasure in redesigning kitchenware, furniture, and household appliances. On the other hand i have a great passion luxury, hand made products that have an extremely limited and short production, products that would be more suited to design museums and magazines. Household objects and luxury limited production products may seem very different but they share longevity. Successful and functional designs as well as curated pieces do not go out of fashion, they remain embedded in culture, often returning with an even greater significance.
