 Rational

Compact and easy to use, this pot sieve is an innovative piece of kitchenware designed to maximise shelf space. It is aimed at young females who have recently moved out, the pot sieve also encourages healthy home cooking.

Many of the current utensils available at department store are aimed at older upper middle class females above the age of 30. There is a big gap between the more professional tools and the utensils designed and aimed at mothers. In other words there aren’t many products on the market specifically designed for my target market.

The solution was to approach the issue in a different manner. “What if it stayed on the pot while you poured the water out?”  It was designed smaller kitchens as it is much more compact compared to a conventional colander. I noticed a lot of people do not actually need a full sized colander to drain food that that has been boiled.

After conduction research, I discovered the market was after a fun product, tools that are used again and again, not because they are purely functional but are a pleasure to use. Ideally the pot sieve would be available in many colours, bright vibrant hues that mimic or reference pastel nail polish.

This product is manufactured out of pressed polypropylene #5 which is recyclable, it is then covered in silicone rubber. The silicone is died with a thermachromatic paint, which reacts to heat and changes colour. This adds a further level of response to the product. Both materials are can withstand temperatures well over boiling point. The outer layer is very grippy even when wet, which reduced the chance of a slip.

Cooking is not just about preparing food, it is about it is about pleasuring our senses.

  1. I like your design in that it solves a problem with an easy to use, store and wash solution; thus making it more pleasurable. The choice of materials is spot on due to its heat resistance and that it's easy to clean. To strengthen the arguement for your target market I believe the shape could have been slightly different. As for ease of use; a clip on function could have been added as opposed to using your thumbs to support a mass amount being strained from a pot. As I mentioned before I do believe that this is a great solution to a common problem in which strainers/colanders aren't pleasureable to use.

  2. I love the idea of a strainer you can hold, while pouring out water. The thermachromatic paint which increase the dynamics of this product appeal is very clever.
In terms of improvements further development of the shape might prove to be successful?

  3. I love this idea!. I love how you have integrated a pot and a strainer, it is such a clever idea. I think it is very practical and i am sure i would use this in the home. The only way i could improve this would to make sure the strainer is able to be attached to the pot. Overall you have done really well!! WELDONE!!

  4. I think this is a really clever idea and i would definitely like to own one in my kitchen. I like the thumb points for holding and think the silicone touch would enhance the users experience.

  5. this is a great idea. I really like the finger handels and the overall shape. I think you could have gone for a brighter range of colours to make it more visually pleasing and easy to find in a drawer full of things.
