project one: sheet materials

Rationale

This Ipad stand concept is constructed from 2.5 mm sheet aluminium. It utilizes several manufacturing processes, laser cutting and press brake bending machines, both of which are perfect for large run production runs.

As well as being suited to mass production my design uses a minimal amount of material, achieved with a simplistic geometric net form, also through modulation and tessellation of the unfolded layout. The modulation of the net layout drastically reduces waste material, less than 8% of a 1200x900 sheet is wasted. It can also be constructed from reclaimed aluminium sheet varying in thickness from 2-3mm.

I believe this design is successful as it adheres to the physical limitations of my materials and processes, through simplicity of form and manufacturing processes. My stand is aimed at single professionals aged 25-35 who live in the inner city.
